Not sure what we are supposed to "get used to". However this host planet and Nature are both teaching us things we cannot even deal with. Why? Because we are totally divorced from both.
I said…so what?... get used to it and get over it.
What you are arguing against is human progress… if it was not capitalism and fossil fuels you are critical about it would be something else associated with human development adaption and flourishing…..
Get used to the idea that humans will use anything in reach to support these needs and so far fossil fuels have provided the most important thing we have developed…… reliable abundant and affordable energy sources… and these will also evolve when they meet that same criteria.
And so far the most effective mechanism to make this happen is capitalism .. so get over thinking we have anything better…
And stop the doom stuff… its scaring instead of motivating the population.
Brilliant and provocative article. “Get used to it” is evocative of Scott McNealy’s brutal claim in 1999, "You have zero privacy anyway. Get over it". Capitulation to ecocide and fascism is not an option!
Another compelling read is “The Killing Age” by Clifton Crais and his idea of the “mortecene” age now underway.
Yes to your opening questions, Counter. I loved your, "Hence the current epoch should be titled Capitalocene — instead of the prevailing consensus, called the Anthropocene." Many of us are stuck in the assumption that it is human nature itself that is the problem.
It is sufficient clear that the earth system crisis is not Anthropogenic. What has been a big misleading path (botched science) framed by a host of experts, who are in essence serving capitalism and their own private concerns. Is why environmentalism has been partly sequestered by energy, by ethno-nationalism, by technological reform and no questions about the root cause of climate change, global warming, loss of biodiversity and habitat, endless wars, rising militarism and genocide. You take fossil fuels and fossil capitalism out of the system, and the entire thing (civilization) will crash in a day! Thanks for reading sir…
I'm struggling here... There is no Human-created climate change (nor "global warming" - in fact, the planet is cooling a wee bit lately). And while the money flows, the moneyed psychopaths in control on Our planet (by virtue of money) are using oil for profit. But capitalism is not "linked" to it. They're trying to get Us all on electrical vehicles (that They can control), and the oil thing is going away.
And... They hide the free energy technologies avidly, likely producing energy for free and selling it to Us...
On top of that, They own all the for-profit corp(se)orations Most call "governments" (I call them governmafias) on the planet and are putting on a play for Us. Literally. On the world stage.
Differing dialectics and experience can coexist.. that said, we can concur that current energy systems, the imbalance and the politics of the same, has set the planet on fire!
I have often said that this planet is hard-wired to explode. The arms race has nations around the world armed to the teeth, some with fewer dollars have less expensive armaments (or smuggled) and those with more dollars have more expensive armaments. I often wonder why we, as human beings, spend so much money on instruments/tools/weapons to kill one another.
The other part of this Fossil Capitalism is the amount of "stuff" that is made from fossil fuels, especially petroleum. Our world is becoming more and more plastic and less and less natural. Practically everything has been derived from some type of plastic, even our food, if you take into account that plastic is leached into the food stored in plastic containers.
Are we in the industrial world, willing to give up fossil fuels and most importantly all the fun stuff we get that are made from plastics? Remember all those masks that ended up in the ocean during the so-called Covid19 p(l)andemic?
As I watch the missiles and bombs fly through the air, back and forth, my heart sinks and it cries for our planet.
As I watch the destruction of Gaza, Iran, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Venezuela, my heart sinks and it cries for our planet.
Yet, I will go to my car, pour oil into the engine, gas into the tank, sit on the plastic interior, turn the plastic steering wheel, go to the market with my reusable plastic bags and purchase items wrapped in plastic.
While I do live minimalistically as much as I can, I am still in an environment that does not support this planet's eco-system and to be honest, I am too old and too unprepared to live in the woods.
They tell us it's the modern age, they leave out how fossil capitalism will eventually throw us back into the stone age.
I sincerely thank you for this article. I will crosspost it as food for thought for my readers. I've tried in some of my own articles to bring this issue up. Needless to say, my perspective went over like a lead balloon. We folks of the so-called modern age, do not want to face the fact that we are feeding the beast that will ultimately devour us.
Hi ... this bit stands out so true: " this planet is hard-wired to explode."
Petro-states, Petro-militarism and Fossil Capitalism have now taken the entire planet as hostage. Nations, political economies, people and their means of production, all bound into the utterly destructive logic of the above (as a historic process). Even to imagine, if a global catastrophe throws us back to the "stone age" it will be better than this age of ours - the Capitalocene. Many thanks, for reading and sharing.
Your thoughts on Fossil Capitalism are a kin to what I call my substack, "Think Outside the Box". Most people in our world are so addicted to modern convenience that they don't realize that these conveniences come with a heavy price. There is no quick fix. We are knee deep. We've been duped to believe that the industrial revolution is a "good" thing. When in actuality it has disconnected us from the natural order and nature itself. We don't realize how bound to an "utterly destructive logic" we are. Those of us who point it out, get major pushback and are accused of being anti-progress. Some may call us hypocrites because we "benefit" from fossil capitalism. There's a reason Atlantis "sank" to the bottom of the sea. Namaste.
Indeed, there is no quick-fix and we are knee-deep. So true, that they taught us insane lies in school - about the industrial revolution and the bountiful success of cheap energy. How it turned out, is totally contrary. Time has run out, or perhaps all the precipitous collapse was long pending. I will follow your work and look forward to further interaction / exchange. Best wishes, Namaste, Buenas!

The correct comment is ....... so what?... get used to it and get over it.

Anyone counting the "carbon footprint" of all the U.S. Imperialist wars and those 800+ overseas US military bases around the world?
